It's a utility that we System Admin types use to remotely connect to computers/servers. Although it can be used to connect and monitor your PC without you knowing it, that's not the intended purpose. For example, my department spans 20 miles and rather than trying to debug a user's problems over the phone or drive a long distance, I can simply connect to the user's desktop and see what the problem is and help resolve it.
The fact that you know that you have DameWare on your system seems to indicate you've got the icon in your system notification area (near your clock). If you hover over it, it should indicate if there are any connected users at any given time. Perhaps your IT support staff did after hours work on your PC. I suggest you go ask your boss about it.
