Can't connect fully Please help

Postby chrisd1986 on Wed Mar 10, 2010 11:27 am

Hi I'm fairly new to all of this but seem to have select few things working.

Firstly I can connect from home to remote server (SBS 2003), from NT Utilities I can see all workstations that are in the active directory but I simply cant do anything with them, can't ping or connect.

Can somebody please tell me I'm missing something really obvious, it's for my mum's network and she just want me to be able to control them all remotely!

Thank you in advance.

What are the target machines OS? If Win XP or higher, check their Windows Firewall settings. If enabled, you'll have to allow the ports that use the services you want via DNTU.

Well if you cannot ping the target machines, then you have a more fundamental issue, not just with Dameware. Can you ping the target machines from the SBS server?

I presumed this from your earlier post, but are all machines on the same local network?

If you can hit the SBS server just fine, and the XP target machines are on the same network as the SBS box, do you have any other devices in between that would not be allowing you to receive ping responses from the target machines?

Also, you did not mention how you are connecting to the SBS server. Is it via VPN or a public IP that is doing NAT?

Hi all the machines are on the same network, The sbs has two nic's one direct to the router and one to the network switch. From the network switch to patch panel then off to the workstations. The domain has a public ip and his how i connect to server. I have since tried to ping the workstations from the server and it is not possible through i.p or name. Please help im sorry this is so vague im new to all of this as my mum was let down by her support company. I can do the basics but thats about it! Thanks in advance :)

Having the multiple NICs on your server probably explains why you can't hit the workstations directly from your Dameware machine. If you're connecting to the server with the NIC that's connected to the router, then it's probably a different IP scheme then your workstations that are connected to that other NIC.

At this point, I'm thinking your best bet would be to connect to the server and then run your remote sessions from there. However, if you cannot ping your workstations from the server either, then that is an issue.

I'm assuming your workstations can talk to the server just fine? If so, you need to find out why you cannot ping the workstations from your server.

all of the workstations are talking to server through one nic and the server talks to the router on the other. The workstations can all ping the server but not the otherway I will do some more googleing but not really sure what to do. Dameware can see them through the active directory but not do anything to them. Thanks for your time and help :)

I think you can see the workstations via Dameware through the AD because you can hit your SBS server, which is running your AD.

Fix the communication to the workstations from the server first. If they are not responding to pings, you'll need to find out why. Try a tracert to a workstation IP, so "tracert IP address" w/out the quotes. This will tell you the path it is taking to the workstations. Since it doesn't get there, it should tell you where it is being blocked and you could investigate further from there.

I have tried the tracert command and all it does is request timed out for some reason but will keep trying different things until I do get them to talk. Thank you again you've been a big help!
